Tuesday, August 8th we left our mooring in Wareham and made our way up the Cape Cod Canal to Sandwich Marina. The canal is another big, changing current location with speeds over 4 knots. Thunderstorms were on the way and the current was just changing in our favor. We had a small window – and we took it and were able to make it to the marina safe and sound.
Sandwich Marina is a lovely spot on the Canal at the entrance to Cape Cod Bay. There is a Coast Guard Station there and a beautiful walk/bike trail on both sides of the Canal. A well used amenity with folks taking advantage of the fishing, the views and the breeze coming from Cape Cod Bay.
Bob has been coming to Cape Cod for summers since he was a child. Eventually his parents found their permanent spot in a beautiful beach house at Sagamore Beach. His sister Nancy and her husband George now hang their hats there…and the hats of their five children and 12.5 grandchildren! It is so fun to walk in this house and on the beach of this place that has been near and dear to his family for almost 50 years.
We spent four days at the Sandwich Marina. We rode our bikes into Sandwich for an afternoon. Had a snack at the Brown Jug and walked through the lobby of the Daniel Webster Inn where Bob has fond memories of brunch with his mom. Our time at Saggy was spent visiting with Nan and Geo and two of their daughters, some grandchildren and some of their delightful neighbors. Nan and Geo and their girls graciously made dinner a couple nights and the four of us went to the Chart Room and had a great dinner in yet another of Bob’s old stomping grounds. He learned to sail there, in Pocasset.
On Saturday, August 12th, we left the dock at the marina very early and headed towards our next stop, Gloucester. Before leaving Cape Cod Bay, we did a fly by at Sagamore Beach and were sent off by Nan and Geo on the back wall of their neighbor Margot’s home. What a fun time we had!
